Update: OK, I have figured out, by some guesswork, what was going on, and thought I'd post this for the benefit of others who might run into a similar problem - Reason Behind the Error 0x80000003: This error can occur due to a number of reasons. I don't know what version of Home XP operating system it is, because each attempt to see the "System Information" is met with the same error message mentioned above.P.P.S. K. BTW, I am running on XP Home. I canceled and closed out that window, then proceeded with the Avast download/installation. chkdsk doesn't find any errors. Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in "selective" startup mode - you should note what these are before beginning.

I searched my > system (XP Home, btw) and found the files in a folder other than system32, > so > I copied them into there. You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.
