SOLVED: on asking host provider to verify that the ‘session.save_path’ was correct, it transpired that the /var/tmp filesystem had suddenly filled which was affecting PHP's ability to write session files. Will that remedy it temporarily? Worked fine in Netscape 7.1, but not in IE 6. This solution may not work for everyone, but I hope it helps some people!
