I spent hours of frustration yesterday trying to solve this glitch on a new install of Maya that runs in a VM. The name resolve order uses hosts files first and broadcasts last and it is commented out! I must admit, I've given up this "network neighbourhood" like stuff and always address the hosts directly with "net use \\host\share" in Windows.
