Rather than the Linux method I hooked the hard drive up to another XP PC and copied the required files across.

I then get the 'Press any key to boot from CD' message. I did this for a very long time until for one file it refused to accept the XP Pro cd even. When it gave me a copy error what I did was insert this XP Pro cd (tried this out a few days back). This might also be the source of your original problems.
